Removals from Leatherhead to Italy

Removals from Leatherhead to Italy — Tuscany, Umbria, the lakes and the cities, with restricted-access permits arranged weeks before the vehicle is loaded.

Italy is the route where the destination paperwork starts earliest. Historic centres are ringed by limited traffic zones with cameras, permits and operating hours, and a great many of the properties British buyers choose sit inside one. That is a paperwork exercise begun while the survey is still fresh, not a decision made on the morning of the delivery.

The route

onto the M25 at junction 9, round to the M20 and out through the Kent crossings Then the long run south through France, where it forks: the Alpine tunnels via the Gotthard, Fréjus or Mont Blanc for the north, or Provence into Liguria and the A12 past Genoa for Tuscany and below. In winter that fork becomes a real decision rather than a formality.

Where deliveries go

  • Tuscany — Florence, Siena, Lucca, the Chianti, the Val d'Orcia
  • Umbria and Le Marche — Perugia, Todi, Spoleto, the Sibillini foothills
  • Piedmont and Liguria — Turin, the Langhe, the Riviera di Ponente
  • Lombardy and the lakes — Milan, Como, Maggiore, Garda
  • The Veneto — Verona, Padua, the Dolomite approaches
  • Rome and Lazio — apartment deliveries inside restricted-access zones

The last hundred metres is a Surrey lane with better weather

Outside the cities the problem is one this firm already solves every week. A stone house at the end of an unmade road, a courtyard entrance built for a cart, a village square a long vehicle cannot turn in — which is the Mole Valley under Box Hill with a different view. We ask for photographs of the final approach before quoting, and where a full-size vehicle will not reach the door we arrange a transfer for the last stretch in advance and price it in.

Customs

Household effects entering Italy attract relief when residence is being transferred, but the case is made on documentation: your codice fiscale, evidence of residence being established, and a valued inventory in the format Italian customs expect. They are more particular about presentation than most, so we prepare it to that standard.

Dedicated vehicle or shared space

A dedicated vehicle means your dates and the fewest handlings. Shared space means a lower cost, a delivery window rather than a named day, and more handlings along the way. On a household with pieces you would mind losing, the handling count is a real argument for a dedicated vehicle, and we will make that argument rather than quietly selling the cheaper option.

Starting the move

Both addresses, rough dates, a sense of the volume, and whether shared space is an option for you. We will survey and quote in writing. See European removals for how the four compare.

Moving to Italy — questions

01 Alps or coast?

Northern Italy goes over via the Gotthard, Fréjus or Mont Blanc. Tuscany and below usually take the coastal road through Provence into Liguria. The decision is made on destination and season, not preference.

02 What happens in winter?

The Alpine options stop being automatic. Passes close and chain regulations bite, and a loaded vehicle is not the thing to discover that with. We take the longer coastal road rather than gamble.

03 What is a ZTL?

A limited traffic zone over the historic centre of most Italian towns, camera-enforced. If your address is inside one, delivery needs a permit arranged in advance with the local comune.

04 Can you deliver into a hill town?

With planning. The answer is a transfer to a small vehicle for the last stretch, arranged in advance rather than improvised. Photographs of the approach make it plannable.

05 What does Italian customs want?

Your codice fiscale, evidence residence is being transferred, and a valued inventory in the format Italian customs expect. They are more particular about presentation than most.

06 We are moving artwork or instruments. Anything extra?

Possibly. Items of cultural significance can carry export considerations of their own, and instruments are sensitive to what an Alpine crossing does. Raise both at survey with photographs.

Moving to Italy?

Send both addresses and a note of anything awkward at either end. We survey, plan the access and prepare the customs file.
